Utah #2 - Cedar Break! Brian Head! Bryce! Zion! Kolab!

Friday, Aug 7th – another travel day for us!  Drove to Cedar City, Utah!  We  really really like this little city!  I could live here – small feeling but they have everything you’d need.  Don’t ask me to live here in the winter though, haha. We checked in to the Cedar City KOA around 2:00 and after we got set up, we went on into town to explore and get some dinner.  We ended up at the Ninja Steak House.  We were hungry for Lampu or Kiku while we were at home, but never found the time to go, since our last 4 days were at the beach.  We love eating at both those restaurants at home.  So we saw this place, and it sounded perfect.  VERY nice restaurant, and our chef really put on a show!  Lots more flamboyant moves than Lampu!  He did all the same things, but then twirled plates all around and behind his back.  After cooking our fried rice, instead of putting it on our plates like they do at home, he put it in individual bowls, and flipped them all around, one even up in his chef hat!  Very skilled! Then he gave us our little divided dishes for the sauce, and there was NO WHITE SAUCE!!  Whaaaaat?  How could that be?  We love the white sauce at home!  They don’t have that out west apparently.  We had a ginger sauce, and a spicy mustard sauce, which was tasty but nothing to compare with our white sauce!!  It was a LOT more expensive than the ones at home too, so I told Earl, you’d think for what we’re paying, they could have gotten us some white sauce!  Haha
We struck up a conversation with a couple by us, Dean and Peggy.  They live in Salt Lake City but were traveling through on business, so they were giving us all kinds of tips and guidance as to where to eat and what to see while we’re here.  We didn’t realize the University of Southern Utah is here, and this week is the Shakespeare Festitval, so we’re definitely going to go over tomorrow and try to get tickets to a show while we’re here.

Saturday, August 08, we woke up early – we’re still adjusting to the time change, I think.  We’re putting in a contract on a house we found last week in FL, so I got up early to write the contract.  It’s gorgeous today – sunny and bright – supposed to be a high of 85.  Late morning, we headed up to Southern Utah University to get tickets to the Shakespeare Festival.  NO LUCK!  Completely sold out!  Bummer!  So then we took off and went to Cedar Break, just very close to us, and soooo beautiful!  Elevation at one place was well over 11,000 feet, and it was COLD.  55 degrees an extremely windy!  It felt icy cold.  Part of the time I had on my leather jacket and was still cold!  It would have been just gorgeous except for the wind.  Sure makes for a bad hair day, but oh well…. We loved every minute of our hiking the trails, and stopping at the overlooks to take photos.

We have commented over and over how many Europeans and Asians are over here.  Sometimes we'll be hiking all over the place, and not hear one word of English! At one of the overlooks, we overheard this couple talking, and I said to Earl, "now there's someone from the South!"  They noticed Earl's shirt immediately and came right over to us to talk.  They are avid Seminole fans, so there was some trash talk going back and forth, haha.  Fun to meet people from FL though (originally from GA, thus the deep Southern accent.

We have just marveled at all the beauty we’ve seen!  We were talking today, wondering what God was thinking when He created all this, and the extreme variations in terrain, etc.  We decided He knew one day we’d be taking a trip out west and knew how much we’d appreciate His handiwork, and that maybe, just maybe, He had us in mind!

We got back to Cedar City about 3:00 so stopped in and had a shrimp quesadilla on the way home to the RV. It was about 85 and just a slight breeze, perfect for sitting outside reading.  Although it was once again, a time where I’d be in the shade and then decide I wanted a little more sunshine, and so I’d move my chair to the sunny area, and then I’d feel like I might be getting burned, so I moved back to the shade.  I bet my neighbors, if they were watching, wondered what I was doing.  I finished the Robin Cook book I was reading, so now I’m going back to my Wagons West series.  Later I enjoyed a long phone conversation with Sheila and Orlan.  We just laughed and laughed about things – no one makes me laugh like Sheila.  She’s like a good dose of medicine for me.

Sunday, August 9th -  We went to worship at a local church this morning. True Life Center in Cedar City.  We had no idea what kind of church, just liked what we read about it online.  So we went to the 11:00 service.  We have a good idea its background is a Pentecostal church.  Freedom in worship, and a looooonnnnng message!  It was really good, we’re just not quite used to a 2.5 hour service!  It was great though, as the pastor, Pete Akins, had just come back from a 3 week vacation and during that time, they went to Yellowstone. This was the fulfillment of a life long dream for him and his entire message was related to the things he learned in Yellowstone.  He just fell in love with the Creator all over again, and we so identified with all he said, as that’s how we’ve felt while traveling this amazing country! His points included the fact that he knew the Artist! Faithfulness, relating to the Old Faithful Geyser and that it has always erupted faithfully thrilling millions of viewers every year, relating to the faithfulness of God. And "re-seeding", talking about how sometimes things have to die in order to have wonderful growth.  It was quite interesting.

We enjoyed a great lunch – FINALLY!  We were hungry as we didn’t leave church till after 1:30. We were not thinking that we’re still in “Mormon Country” and there is VERY seldom you can find ANYthing open on Sundays!  No stores, no restaurants, nothing!  I remember that’s how it was in my childhood, all part of the “keeping the Sabbath Day holy”.  I think somehow we’ve missed out by Sunday being just like every other day.  We did finally find a little Main Street Diner that was open until 2:00 so we barely made it.  I had a patty melt and Earl had an omelet.  We came home – just beautiful weather to sit out so we relaxed and read all afternoon.

August 10 – Monday – We set out for Bryce Canyon! It so exceeded everything I’ve ever seen or heard about it.  Wow!  Wow! Wow!  Just spectacular.  I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.

Tuesday, August 11th, we took a day to catch up on some business and rest! We went to the local WF Bank to wire our escrow in for the house we bought in FL. Earl has been wanting to get the oil changed in the car, so we found the local WalMart that had a big automotive department, so we got a new battery and oil change, while I shopped a bit.  Then home to read and relax.

Wednesday, off to see Zion Nat'l Park and came home by way of Kolab Canyons, which is technically part of Zion. Spectacular! Each fold, wrinkle, bend, slope, mesa top and canyon bottom creates a unique experience. I started to write a lot of what we learned but it might bore you.  So again, we'll let the photos speak for themselves, and believe me, these are just a handpicked few out of hundreds of photos! Today was an overcast day - rain expected, but we never had more than a few drops.  However the photos are not as spectacular as when we have blue skies and fluffy white clouds.

This is far and away the darkest tunnel we've ever seen.  So glad we didn't have the RV today.  The highest point of the tunnel is 13'3" and our RV is 12'8" and that little clearance makes me really nervous.  They have to escort RVs through as the RV has to go in the center of the tunnel which takes up both lanes and really slows down traffic!

Notice the color variations and shadings, as well as the layered appearance of the rock.

By the afternoon, the skies had cleared and it was just a beautiful sunny afternoon so we decided to head on out this afternoon......On to Kolab Canyons.....

Notice how RED the roads are!

What a wonderful week! We're almost on sensory overload from all the beauty.  It's really been a worshipful week, as we so truly worship and adore the Creator who is the ultimate Artist!

Thursday, was a day of rest before we head out for several days of just overnights as we continue on.  Never quite as restful, but we have to get through the desert.  Today we read outside until mid afternoon, when it began to get a little warm - high 80's and then we headed out to the library which has faster internet than the RV park, and it is my opportunity to catch up on the blog.  Traveling on tomorrow....stay tuned.  So glad you're with us on this adventure!
