Winslow, AZ - Meteor Crater - Walnut Canyon - fun days

Friday, May 29 – We meant to have just a quiet day reading, but got started, after checking email, doing household things.  Our bank statements were in, so I got ready to print them out and the black wouldn’t print.  Changed cartridges, nothing!  Cleaned the print heads several times, googled other solutions, etc. No success!  Bummer, so we’ll go into Flagstaff tomorrow and buy a new printer.  I can’t complain, this one is likely 7-8 years old.  The RV repair guy came out late morning and replaced the slideout motor for the bedroom (the other one!).  SO happy to have that working again!  I paid some bills, and by early afternoon, READING time.  Gorgeous sunny day, high temp of 82, ahh….

Saturday – our last day here.  We relaxed till mid-morning and then decided to go check out Winslow, AZ.  We were told by our friend, John Moeller to be sure and check out the flatbed truck and send him a photo which we did.  The Eagles made the song, “Take it Easy” famous back in the 70’s I think, and while I knew the song, I have to admit I’d forgotten the lyrics  about the girl in the flatbed truck slowing down to look at me.  Haha  AND the now famous Standing on the Corner right there in Winslow.
Here are the words to the song...

Great mural on the side of this building.  Note in the upper windows a bird resting on the window sill and the couple in the window, and of course the flatbed truck.

We ate at a classic 50’s style diner.

Earl loved that they provided homemade jam - what a homey touch.  And then to stroll the rest of this small town.

These are the states where the historic Mother Road - Route 66 is routed.

Check out this tiny chapel - just room for 2 to sit and have a quiet moment.

Earl meets Winslow - as noted on his belt buckle.

Before we left town, one of the clerks told us to be sure to check out the famous La Posada Hotel just down the street.   Built in 1930, this was well worth seeing!

I found this interesting and unusual. I recognized Jackie Kennedy of course, but looking further, you see the King card has John Kennedy's face on it, and the bullet that killed him ripping through the card.  Sad day in our history.
On leaving Winslow, look what we saw....

After seeing Winslow (which didn’t take long, haha) we went to see the Meteor Crater, which they claim was created 50,000 years ago!  They say a meteor ended its 500 million year journey through space on a collision course with Earth.  Travelling at appr. 26,000 MPH, struck the Earth with an explosive force greater than 20M tons of TNT!  It’s nearly a mile across and more than 550 feet deep.  I left my phone in the car so didn't have photos once we went in - we grabbed a couple online.

Continuing on our journey, we stopped at Walnut Canyon…..

We decided to end our day splitting a fajita at Pancho’s right in downtown Williams.  Just love this little town, so scenic and quaint with such beautiful weather.  We enjoyed eating outside and on beyond us we could see the Zip Line carrying people along Route 66 there, so after dinner, we impulsively decided to ride the Zip Line!  What a fun way to end our day and tomorrow we head on out again…
